BTS Told The Grammys 'No Thanks' and Bestie, They Have a Point
the Recording Academy rolled out a shiny new 'Best Asian Pop Music Performance' category and BTS looked at it like… so we're the kids' table now? all seven are sitting the 69th Grammys out.
no bc the audacity. the Recording Academy dropped five new categories for the 69th Grammys — one of them Best Asian Pop Music Performance — and instead of clapping, BTS just quietly declined to submit anything at all. iconic move, honestly.
the reasoning is the un-delulu part. the boys basically said music should be heard for what it is, not sorted by region or language: "We hope that music will be heard and loved for what it is." a category that sounds inclusive but functionally boxes Asian artists out of the General Field (read: Album of the Year, the awards that actually matter)? no thank you.
critics have been screaming the same thing — a dedicated Asian pop award reads less like a seat at the table and more like a separate table in a different room. the biggest group to ever do it opting out is the loudest possible way to say the quiet part out loud.
the 69th Grammys go down February 7, 2027, and BTS will simply… not be in the running, by choice. ARMY got a thank-you, the Academy got a message, and the group keeps its whole principle intact. mother is mothering and making a point.

song of the year AND best k-pop for 'Swim,' plus Lisa, Jisoo and LE SSERAFIM got called up — vmas hit sept 27
the 2026 MTV VMA nominations dropped and bestie... k-pop did NOT come to play. BTS pulled up with two nods and i'm being so normal about it (i am not being normal about it).
BTS scored Song of the Year AND Best K-Pop for "Swim," the title track off their fifth studio album "Arirang." for the girlies keeping score: Song of the Year is a GENERAL-field category, not a genre box — so the bar is on the floor for everyone else.
and it wasn't just them. Lisa racked up FOUR nominations for "Dream" (best pop, best k-pop, best cinematography, best editing). Jisoo landed a best visual effects nod for "Eyes Closed" with Zayn. BLACKPINK's "Jump" and LE SSERAFIM's "Spaghetti" — featuring j-hope, keeping it in the family — both grabbed best k-pop noms too.
newer acts Cortis and Katseye got called up as well, so the pipeline is THRIVING. the ceremony goes down september 27 at the Peacock Theatre in LA.
and let's not forget Rosé took Song of the Year for "APT." last year — so k-pop walking into this room is basically a homecoming now. we are so back. 💅
